Abaco Ferry Survival Tips

Island Time is Real

Ferries usually run on schedule, but "usually" is the key word. Show up 15 minutes early and bring a book. Sunday schedules? Totally different ball game!

Weather Happens

Winter cold fronts (Dec-March) can cancel ferries. Always have a backup plan if you're catching a flight. Captain's word is final - safety first!

Cash is King

Most ferries are cash only. There's an ATM at Maxwell's grocery in Marsh Harbour, but it runs out on busy weekends. Bring small bills!

Pack Smart

No baggage limits, but you'll be carrying everything yourself. Soft bags are easier than hard suitcases. Coolers welcome for day trips!

Stay Connected

Follow ferry operators on Facebook for real-time updates. Cell service works on all the cays, but download offline maps just in case.

Last Ferry Blues

Missing the last ferry means an expensive water taxi ($150+) or an unexpected sleepover. Set a phone alarm for 30 minutes before departure!

Who Actually Runs the Abaco Ferries in 2026

This trips people up, so here is the short version. Albury's Ferry Service ran the cays for more than 60 years until Hurricane Dorian wrecked its fleet in 2019. Albury's has since announced a merger and acquisition with GNL Transportation, and its own website now sends passengers to G&L Ferry for the ticketed schedule. G&L operates nine boats on the Hope Town, Man-O-War and Guana Cay runs plus charters, and the Abaco Bulletin now lists Albury's itself as no longer operational.

A separate company, The Ferry Limited, was founded in December 2020 by four former Albury's managers and two Spanish Wells investors to take over Albury's damaged assets. It is not the same as the Albury's–GNL merger, and its website is no longer online — so ignore any guide that tells you to book through it.

What this means for you: nothing complicated. Turn up at the dock, buy a ticket, get on the boat — no reservations are needed for scheduled runs. G&L: (242) 816-2628 office, (242) 359-6208 Grant, (242) 577-0611 Lyle. Albury's legacy line (242) 367-0290 still answers.

Where to Stay in Abaco

Marsh Harbour is the practical base — the Hope Town and Man-O-War boats leave from The Crossing, and you can reach every cay on a day trip. Staying on Elbow Cay itself is the better call if Hope Town is your main target, and it's the only way to work around Man-O-War's two-boats-a-day schedule comfortably. The map below covers Marsh Harbour, Hope Town and Treasure Cay; bookings through these links support BahamasHopping at no extra cost.

Got Questions?

Abaco Ferry FAQ

Did Albury's Ferry and G&L Ferry really merge?

Yes. Albury's Ferry Service announced a merger and acquisition with GNL Transportation, and its own website now points passengers to G&L Ferry for the ticketed schedule. G&L runs the Marsh Harbour services to Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay and Great Guana Cay with a fleet of nine boats, plus private charters. One thing to watch: The Ferry Limited is a different company — founded in December 2020 by four former Albury's managers as a post-Dorian successor — and its website is no longer online, so don't try to book through it.

How much does the Marsh Harbour to Hope Town ferry cost?

Adults pay $15 one-way or $25 for an open-return round trip. Children aged 6–12 pay $10 / $15, and kids 5 and under travel free with a paying adult. The crossing takes around 20 minutes from The Crossing dock in Marsh Harbour. No reservations are needed for scheduled runs — buy at the dock and bring cash.

Can I take a car on the ferry to Hope Town or Man-O-War?

No. The Out Islands' ferries are passenger-only, and most cays restrict private cars anyway — Hope Town and Man-O-War get around by golf cart, bike or on foot. Rentals are easy to arrange at the dock.

How do I get from Nassau to Abaco by ferry?

Bahamas Ferries' Sea Wind sails Nassau (Potter's Cay) to Sandy Point, South Abaco roughly once a week (~1 h 50 min, around $125 round-trip adult / $85 child). There is no direct Nassau → Marsh Harbour ferry — from Sandy Point continue ~50 miles north by road. Mail boats from Potter's Cay also serve Marsh Harbour with vehicles and cargo on multi-hour overnight crossings.

Is Pinder's Ferry from Crown Haven to Grand Bahama still running in 2026?

Yes. Pinder's Ferry runs daily (weather permitting) from Crown Haven in North Abaco to McLean's Town in East Grand Bahama, and the crossing takes about 45 minutes — not the 90 minutes often quoted online. Adults 12+ pay $70 one-way / $140 round trip, children under 12 pay $40 / $80, infants under 2 free, VAT included. Departures: Crown Haven 7:00 AM and 2:30 PM, McLean's Town 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM. Book at pindersferry.com or call (242) 822-8026.

How often does the Man-O-War Cay ferry run?

Less often than most visitors expect: two departures a day from Marsh Harbour, 6:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday to Saturday, with no Sunday service. That makes a spontaneous afternoon visit basically impossible — you either commit to the full day or arrange a private charter. Compare that with Hope Town, which has eight sailings Monday to Saturday.

Is Abaco still recovering from Hurricane Dorian?

Hurricane Dorian (September 2019) caused catastrophic damage to Marsh Harbour, Treasure Cay and Hope Town. Almost seven years on, ferry docks, hotels, shops and beaches have largely rebuilt and normal service has resumed across the cays — but you will still see construction and empty lots, particularly around Marsh Harbour. The clearest sign of the storm's long tail is the ferry business itself: Albury's Ferry Service was knocked out by Dorian, and its Abaco routes are now run by G&L Ferry.
