Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau (NAS) handles most international arrivals, and the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism counts twenty airports with scheduled international service. Freeport (FPO) is the second gateway. Several Out Island airports take direct flights from Florida, Atlanta, Charlotte and, in a few cases, Canada.

This page lists which airports and airlines the official sources confirm, how long the flights take and where a ferry fits into the trip. Schedules change by season, so every route below carries the source in the list at the bottom. Facts were checked on October 3, 2026.

Airports and who flies there

The table shows airports with scheduled passenger service from the United States, Canada or Europe, based on the Ministry of Tourism schedule and the airlines' own pages. Smaller islands such as Cat Island, Long Island and Andros are covered on the inter-island flights page.

Flying from the US

Nassau has the most nonstop options. The flight times below are the typical ranges published by the Ministry of Tourism; airlines' scheduled block times differ slightly.

Miami is the busiest link: the Ministry schedule shows American five times a day on that route. Frequencies on most other routes drop to a few days a week outside winter, so check the airline calendar before building a trip around a specific day.

From Canada and Europe

Air Canada flies Toronto and Montreal to Nassau all year. WestJet and Porter also serve Toronto year-round, and Calgary, Ottawa, Halifax and Porter's Montreal service are seasonal. Toronto to Nassau takes 3 h 30 min to 4 h. Air Canada lists a Sunday Toronto to Great Exuma flight in season, and Sunwing flies Toronto and Montreal to Freeport on Saturdays.

British Airways flies Heathrow to Nassau; the Ministry schedule shows it daily, while its Nassau page calls the service usually seasonal. Flight time is 9 h 20 min to 9 h 50 min. Virgin Atlantic is listed twice weekly from Heathrow, and its site was selling October 2026 departures on October 3. Air Caraïbes lists Paris Orly to San Salvador on Thursdays. Most other European travelers connect through New York, Miami or Toronto.

Bimini by air

Flights land at South Bimini Airport, and a short boat ride leads to Alice Town on North Bimini. American flies Miami to Bimini on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday (about 1 h). Aztec Airways flies from its private terminal at Fort Lauderdale on Sunday and Thursday. Western Air connects Nassau daily (about 30 min) and Freeport twice a week (about 20 min).

Tropic Ocean Airways flies seaplanes from the Sheltair terminal at Fort Lauderdale to the North Bimini Seaplane Base daily, and its scheduled by-the-seat service carries 30 lb of baggage per person to Bimini. Silver Airways is no longer an option. Comparing times and costs against the boat is covered in the ferry vs. flight guide.

Freeport by air

American flies Miami to Freeport daily. Bahamasair flies from Fort Lauderdale on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, from Raleigh on Thursday and Sunday, and from Nassau. Western Air flies Fort Lauderdale and Nassau daily. Freeport has US preclearance, so passengers returning to the United States clear US customs before boarding. The Fort Lauderdale to Freeport ferry takes about 3 hours and is listed under ferry routes.

Exuma, Eleuthera and Abaco direct flights

Exuma (GGT)

American flies Miami (about 1 h) and Charlotte daily, and Delta flies Atlanta daily (about 2 h 30 min). Aztec Airways flies from Fort Lauderdale on Sunday and Thursday; Bahamasair serves Fort Lauderdale and Nassau.

Eleuthera and Harbour Island (ELH, GHB, RSD)

North Eleuthera is the airport for Harbour Island and Spanish Wells. American flies from Miami and Charlotte, Delta from Atlanta (about 2 h 10 min). Aztec Airways flies Fort Lauderdale to North Eleuthera twice daily.

Eleuthera, October 2026. Governor's Harbour Airport is closed during October for runway and navigation works and is expected to reopen in early November. Western Air's last North Eleuthera flight was on October 2; it suspended the route because of runway conditions and gave no return date. Confirm your airline's status before booking an Eleuthera flight.

Abaco (MHH, TCB)

American flies Miami and Charlotte to Marsh Harbour daily. Aztec Airways flies Fort Lauderdale daily, Bahamasair flies three days a week, and JSX serves Opa-locka, Dallas Love Field and White Plains on four days a week. Local ferries run from Marsh Harbour to Hope Town, Man-O-War and Guana Cay.

What flights cost

Fares depend on the date, the airline and how far ahead you buy. The examples below were displayed on the airlines' own pages on October 3, 2026 and change daily.

  • JetBlue: Fort Lauderdale to Nassau $95 one-way on January 4, 2027; New York JFK to Nassau $99 one-way on November 16, 2026.
  • Virgin Atlantic: London Heathrow to Nassau from £968 for a trip departing October 6, 2026.
  • Bahamasair homepage: Nassau to Fort Lauderdale from $172.99, Nassau to North Eleuthera from $80.50 (fare basis not stated).
  • Makers Air from Fort Lauderdale Executive: "From" fares between $267 (North Eleuthera) and $438.20 (most Out Island destinations).

Several domestic carriers do not always appear on sites such as Expedia or Kayak, according to the Ministry of Tourism, so the flight search above may not show them. Book those directly with the airline.

Airport charges at Nassau are published in the operator's tariff: per departing international passenger a $38.00 facility charge, a $9.00 security fee and a $10.00 processing fee, which come to $63.84 with VAT. Domestic departures carry $11.00 plus $7.70, VAT included. The Bahamas Customs Department states that, for commercial carriage, departure taxes are charged to the carrier and included in the quoted price. The ticket's fare breakdown shows what was added.

Practical tips

  • Documents. By air, Bahamas Immigration asks for a passport book valid at least six months, a return or onward ticket, proof of funds and a completed embarkation card, and it does not accept the passport card for flights. By ferry from Florida, US citizens can travel with a passport book or a passport card: the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative accepts the card at sea ports, and Baleària takes both from adults and children. A birth certificate is not enough on either route. Details are in the ferry passport guide.
  • Arrival at LPIA. The airport advises arriving 3 hours before international flights and 2 hours before domestic ones. Connecting to an Out Island flight in Nassau, the Ministry suggests at least 1 h 30 min for immigration and customs before the domestic terminal.
  • US preclearance. Nassau and Freeport both clear US customs before departure, so allow time for that line.
  • Taxis from LPIA. Fares are set by zone for two passengers: Cable Beach $29, downtown $36, Paradise Island $45 plus a $2 bridge toll. Each extra passenger adds $5.
  • Private and charter flights. Aztec Airways and similar semi-private operators state that a $29 departure tax is paid to Bahamian Customs before leaving. Commercial airlines normally include it.

Frequently asked questions

Which airport is best for first-time visitors?

Nassau (NAS) has the most nonstop flights from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, and it connects to every other island. Freeport (FPO) has fewer flights but also offers US preclearance.

How long is the flight from Miami to Nassau?

The Bahamas Ministry of Tourism gives 1 h to 1 h 30 min for Miami and 35 to 50 minutes for Fort Lauderdale.

Does Silver Airways still fly to the Bahamas?

No. Silver Airways ceased operations on June 11, 2025 and has not resumed. Current Bimini options are American, Aztec Airways, Tropic Ocean Airways and Western Air.

Can I fly directly to Harbour Island?

The airport is North Eleuthera (ELH), followed by a short ferry crossing. Tropic Ocean Airways lists seaplane service to Harbour Island. In October 2026 some North Eleuthera flights are suspended, so check with the airline first.

Is the departure tax included in my ticket?

For commercial airlines, the Bahamas Customs Department says departure taxes are charged to the carrier and included in the price quoted. Private and charter operators may collect a $29 departure tax separately.

Do US citizens need a passport to fly to the Bahamas?

Yes, a passport book. Bahamas Immigration requires a passport valid for at least six months and does not accept the passport card for air travel. On the ferry from Fort Lauderdale, a passport book or a passport card is accepted.
