Bahamas Ferry with Kids

Real parent tips from 50+ family ferry trips

Why Families Love the Ferry

Real talk from parents who've done it

Look, I'll be honest โ€” when my wife first suggested taking our three kids on a ferry to the Bahamas, I thought she'd lost her mind. Fast forward 50+ trips later, and we're total converts. Here's why the ferry beats flying every single time for families:

Family of 5 Cost Comparison Ferry Flight
Round-trip tickets $750-900 $1,500-2,500
Baggage fees $0 (unlimited!) $280-400
Parking $15/day $25-35/day
Total Savings $800-1,200 per trip!

The ferry is where my kids learned that the journey can be just as fun as the destination. Now they actually request the ferry over flying. As a mom, that 2-hour crossing is quality family time you just don't get at 30,000 feet.

Quick Tips for Success

What I wish someone told me on trip #1

Book Wednesday Departures

Save $20-30 per person compared to Friday sailings. That's $150 for our family!

Upper Deck, Middle Section

Least motion + best dolphin views. Grab seats immediately when boarding opens.

Dramamine 30 Minutes Before

Pediatric dose for kids under 12. Even on calm days โ€” better safe than sorry!

Pack Snacks โ€” Lots!

Onboard cafรฉ is limited and pricey. We bring a whole cooler of favorites.

Download Everything

Ferry WiFi isn't great for streaming. Load devices with movies and games.

Bring a Blanket

AC inside can be freezing! Light blankets save the day every time.

Age-by-Age Guide

Because a toddler and a teen need different strategies

Babies & Toddlers (0-3)

  • Kids under 2 ride FREE (but still need a ticket!)
  • Bring a stroller โ€” terminals are huge
  • Pack 2x the diapers you think you need
  • Baby carrier for boarding/disembarking
  • Nursing/bottle feeding helps with any ear pressure
  • Bring favorite comfort items

Little Kids (4-8)

  • Let them pack their own ferry backpack
  • Bring binoculars for dolphin watching
  • Coloring books and travel games
  • Promise ice cream on the island
  • Make boarding an adventure game
  • Window clings for entertainment

Tweens & Teens (9+)

  • Portable chargers are ESSENTIAL
  • Let them bring a friend (game changer!)
  • Give them photo challenges
  • Some independence on board
  • They'll love the outdoor deck
  • Involve them in trip planning

The 2-Hour Entertainment Plan

How we survive without meltdowns

0-30 minutes
Boarding excitement! Let them explore the ferry, find seats, check out the snack bar. The novelty keeps them busy.
30-60 minutes
Snack attack time. Break out the good stuff โ€” this is vacation! We do special ferry-only treats.
60-90 minutes
Screen time approved. Download movies work great here. The ferry movement is hypnotic.
90-120 minutes
Dolphin watch! Head to the outdoor deck. We see dolphins on 90% of trips โ€” it never gets old!

Common Parent Concerns

Let me put your mind at ease

"What about seasickness?"

As a pediatric nurse, I was SO worried about this. But these ferries are huge and stable โ€” nothing like small boats. In 50+ trips, we've had exactly ONE kid get queasy, and that was during 6-foot seas (they cancelled the next sailing). Give Dramamine 30 minutes before boarding and you'll be fine. The bigger ferries have stabilizers that really work!

"Are the ferries safe for kids?"

Absolutely! They have life jackets in all sizes, the crew does safety briefings, and honestly, I feel safer than at the airport. The railings are high, doors to outside decks can be controlled by parents, and the crew is super helpful with families. Plus, no TSA stress!

"What if my toddler has a meltdown?"

Been there! The ferry noise actually helps mask crying, and fellow passengers are usually understanding (many are families too). There's space to walk around, outdoor decks for fresh air, and honestly? 2 hours goes faster than you think. Way better than being trapped in an airplane seat!

"Is there enough to do for 2 hours?"

Between boarding excitement, snacks, bathroom trips, dolphin watching, and a movie, the time flies. My kids now complain the ferry ride is too SHORT. Pro tip: save something special (new toy, special snack) for the halfway point.

Insider Secrets from 50+ Trips

The stuff nobody tells you

Immigration Tip: When arriving in Bimini, officers board the ferry. Keep kids seated and quiet during this process โ€” it goes much faster. Have passports ready and fill out forms on the ferry.

Terminal Strategies

  • Arrive 90 minutes early โ€” not the suggested 3 hours. Plenty of time, less waiting with antsy kids
  • Park in the garage โ€” Worth the extra $5/day for covered parking and shorter walk
  • Bathroom everyone before boarding โ€” Ferry bathrooms are fine but small
  • Bring your own luggage cart โ€” Terminal carts are often all taken

Money-Saving Hacks

  • Book Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday for lowest prices
  • Kids under 2 free but MUST have a ticket (don't forget!)
  • Pack lunch โ€” save $75+ versus buying on board
  • Round-trip saves 10% automatically
  • Check for promo codes โ€” we've saved 15-20% multiple times

What Nobody Mentions

  • The AC is FREEZING inside โ€” seriously, bring blankets
  • Boarding in Bimini uses stairs โ€” tricky with strollers
  • Ferry WiFi exists but barely works โ€” download everything
  • The outdoor deck gets WET โ€” bring towels
  • Customs forms provided on return trip โ€” bring your own pen

Best Islands for Families

Where to go based on your crew

Bimini (Our Top Pick!)

Only 2 hours from Fort Lauderdale, making it perfect for first-timers or families with young kids. Radio Beach is heaven โ€” crystal clear, no waves, shallow forever. The Hilton has a great pool if kids need a break from sand. Rent a golf cart and explore! Dolphin House is quirky and fun for kids.

Harbour Island

The pink sand beach is MAGICAL โ€” kids are amazed! Very family-friendly vibe, safe for kids to explore. Golf cart island makes transportation easy. More expensive but worth it for a special trip. The ferry from Nassau adds adventure.

Eleuthera

Less touristy = more authentic experience. Queen's Bath is incredible for older kids who can swim. Glass Window Bridge will blow their minds. Lots of beaches to explore means nobody gets bored. Local restaurants super welcoming to families.

Skip for Now: Exuma

Swimming pigs sound fun but can actually be aggressive (they bite!). The extra travel time is tough with little ones. Save this for when kids are older and stronger swimmers. Better as a teen trip honestly.

Why We Keep Coming Back

The real magic of ferry travel

Look, I get it โ€” taking kids on any trip can be stressful. But something magical happens on that ferry. Maybe it's the excitement of seeing dolphins (my kids have a 90% success rate). Maybe it's eating snacks while watching the Miami skyline disappear. Maybe it's just having 2 hours where nobody's asking "are we there yet?" every 5 minutes.

What I know for sure: my kids have learned that getting there really can be half the fun. They've made friends with kids from around the world in the ferry play areas. They've learned to spot flying fish and sea turtles. They've discovered that adventure doesn't require a plane ticket.

And yeah, saving $800+ per trip doesn't hurt either. That's money for ice cream, golf cart rentals, snorkeling trips, and maybe even a babysitter so mom and dad can have a beach dinner alone!

We've saved over $40,000 taking ferries instead of flights over 8 years. That's literally Emma's first year of college paid for! But honestly? Even if it cost the same, we'd choose the ferry. Those 2 hours of family time, dolphin spotting, and adventure are priceless. No security lines, no baggage fees, no stress โ€” just excitement from dock to dock.
