Offshore Tackle (Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo)

Offshore fishing in the Bahamas means serious fish and serious gear. The Gulf Stream brings blue marlin over 500 pounds, yellowfin tuna pushing 200 pounds, and wahoo that'll smoke your drag. Don't show up with freshwater tackle!

Pro Tackle Tips

Rinse After EVERY Trip

Saltwater destroys tackle. Spray everything with fresh water after each trip. Open the drag, rinse the spool, wipe the guides. 5 minutes prevents $500 in damage.

Match the Hatch

Bahamas baitfish are typically smaller than US species. Downsize your lures! A 4" Rapala often outfishes a 7" plug. Ask local captains what's working.

Bring Spares

Tackle shops in the Bahamas are limited and expensive. Bring extra hooks, leader, lures, and line. If you can't buy it in Miami, you won't find it in Bimini.

Wire for Wahoo

Wahoo will cut through fluoro like butter. Use at least 12" of wire leader when trolling. Single-strand #8-10 or 100 lb AFW 49-strand.

Check Your Drag

Set drag at 25-30% of line strength. A fish scale costs $15 - use it! More fish are lost to improper drag than any other factor.

Long Leaders for Flats

Bonefish are spooky. Use 9-12' fluorocarbon leaders, not 3'. The clearer the water, the longer the leader. It's not overkill - it's necessary.
