Navigate Bahamas Ferry Terminals Like a Pro

Your complete guide to every terminal, parking trick, and shortcut I've learned in 7 years of island hopping

Last updated: May 17, 2026 Β· Field notes from 50+ ferry trips Β· Companion to the full Terminals Guide

I've made every terminal mistake in the book β€” wrong Port Everglades terminal, missed ferries, overpaid for parking. After 50+ Florida–Bahamas crossings I've stopped repeating them. This page is the stories: what went wrong, what works now, and the small details that keep you off the standby list. For the structured reference (every parking lot, every check-in window), use the full Terminals Guide.

Major Ferry Terminals

From bustling Port Everglades to laid-back island docks

Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale)

Terminal 21, 2021 Eller Drive

Getting There

Address: 2021 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 (Cruise Terminal 21)

GPS Tip: Search "Balearia Caribbean Terminal" β€” NOT just "Port Everglades". The cruise terminals share the same port complex and I ended up at the wrong one twice on early trips.

  • From I-95: Exit Eller Drive East
  • Follow signs for the ferry terminal, not the cruise ship piers
  • Look for Terminal 21 signs

Parking Options

  • Garage (Covered): from around $20/day β€” worth it in summer
  • Open Lot: from around $15/day β€” car gets hot
  • Valet: available at the terminal entrance if you're running late
  • Uber/Lyft: drop-off is easy; pickup at the end of a sail day can take 20+ minutes

Rates fluctuate seasonally β€” check the Port Everglades website the week of your trip.

Parking Hack

On longer trips, park-and-fly hotels near Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood Airport (FLL) often beat port garage rates and include free airport shuttles β€” then it's a short Uber to Terminal 21. See our pre-ferry picks on Fort Lauderdale hotels near Port Everglades.

Terminal Amenities

  • Check-in opens: 2–2.5 hours before departure (Balearia requires being checked in at least 1 hour before)
  • CafΓ©: basic coffee and sandwiches, on the expensive side
  • Restrooms: clean, use before boarding
  • WiFi: free, can be spotty when the terminal is full
  • Seating: limited β€” arrive early if you want a real seat
  • AC: aggressive β€” bring a layer

Critical Warning

Balearia closes the boarding gate at least 1 hour before departure β€” no exceptions. For a 9:00 AM ferry that means being inside the terminal with bags scanned by 7:30–7:45 AM. I've watched whole families turned away at 8:15.

Potter's Cay Dock (Nassau)

East Bay Street, under the Paradise Island Bridges

Getting There

From Downtown / Cruise Port: ~10 minute taxi, typically $8–$12

From Paradise Island: ~15 minute taxi, typically $12–$18

From Lynden Pindling Airport (NAS): ~30 minutes, typically $30–$40 (Bahamas taxi rates are fixed by zone β€” confirm fare before getting in)

  • Tell the driver "Potter's Cay for the mail boat / Bahamas Ferries" β€” not the cruise port
  • The dock is right under the Paradise Island Bridge on the east end
  • Look for the fish market and conch stalls β€” terminal is right there

Terminal Features

  • Check-in: typically opens ~90 minutes before departure (varies by operator β€” confirm with your ticket)
  • Parking: limited along East Bay Street β€” most travelers arrive by taxi
  • Food: the famous Potter's Cay conch stalls line the dock (cracked conch, conch salad, fish fry)
  • Shade: minimal at the dock itself β€” bring a hat
  • Bathrooms: basic but functional
  • ATM: nearest reliable ATMs are in downtown Nassau β€” pull cash before you arrive

Local's Secret

Arrive 30 minutes early and walk the line of conch stalls under the bridge. Cracked conch and fresh conch salad here are a real Nassau breakfast β€” way better than anything at the airport. Cash only; have small bills ready.

Potter's Cay sits between the eastbound and westbound spans of the Paradise Island Bridge.

Out Island Ferry Terminals

Bimini Β· Freeport Β· Harbour Island Β· Marsh Harbour

Bimini (Alice Town)

  • Right in downtown Alice Town β€” Balearia docks at the public ferry pier
  • Golf cart rentals just up the King's Highway
  • Bahamas Customs & Immigration handled in the same building on arrival
  • Small snack bar and gift shop on site
  • WiFi at most ferry-front cafΓ©s if you need a connection

Freeport (Grand Bahama)

  • Modern terminal at Lucayan Harbour with an air-conditioned waiting area
  • Taxi stand right outside (zone fares β€” confirm before getting in)
  • Rental car desks inside the terminal building
  • Small cafΓ© and concessions; cards usually accepted
  • ATM available β€” generally working but bring backup cash

Harbour Island

  • Tiny dock at Government Dock, Dunmore Town β€” basically a pier
  • Water taxis run on demand from North Eleuthera (Three Island Dock); fares vary, typically a few dollars per person
  • Minimal facilities β€” use the bathroom before you board on the Eleuthera side
  • Golf cart rentals are the way to get around; book ahead in winter peak
  • One of the most beautiful arrival views in the Bahamas β€” pink sand straight off the bow

Marsh Harbour (Abaco)

  • Albury's Ferry runs from Crossing Beach / Conch Inn area to Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay and Guana Cay
  • Walking distance to most shops, marinas and restaurants in town
  • Multiple small docks β€” double-check which one your operator uses; they are NOT interchangeable
  • Many businesses are still rebuilding post-Dorian (2019) β€” be flexible

Terminal Survival Tips

Hard-won wisdom from years of ferry travel

Arrive Crazy Early

For international ferries, be there 2 hours early minimum. For inter-island ferries, 45 minutes. They WILL leave without you – seen it happen too many times!

Cash is King

Many terminals only accept cash for parking, snacks, or last-minute fees. Hit the ATM before you arrive – terminal ATMs charge crazy fees or don't work.

Pack Terminal Essentials

Snacks, water, entertainment, and a portable charger. Terminal food is expensive and limited. WiFi is terrible. Outlets are rare. Be prepared!

Bathroom Strategy

Use terminal bathrooms before boarding! Ferry bathrooms work but can get busy and rocky. Plus, terminal bathrooms are usually cleaner.

Screenshot Everything

Tickets, confirmations, terminal maps, schedules. Terminal WiFi is unreliable and cell service can be spotty. Offline access saves the day!

Dress in Layers

Terminals blast the AC like it's free (looking at you, Fort Lauderdale). But outside waiting areas are hot. Layers are your friend!

After missing my first ferry because I drove to the wrong Port Everglades terminal, I got obsessive about the little details β€” parking spot, bathroom, coffee, gate β€” and built a rhythm that works. Get the terminal right, get there early, and the rest of the trip takes care of itself.
