Mark's Miami Mix-Up Story

"So picture this: It's 2018, my first attempt at the 'Miami to Freeport ferry.' We're all packed — three kids, fishing gear, enough snacks to feed an army. Show up at PortMiami at 7:30 AM, feeling pretty proud of ourselves for being early. Walk up to the info desk and ask where to check in for the Freeport ferry... The lady looks at me like I've got three heads! 'That ferry leaves from Fort Lauderdale, honey.' Mad dash up I-95 in rush hour traffic, kids asking if we're gonna miss the boat, wife giving me that look that says 'I told you to double-check'... We made it with literally 5 minutes to spare! Now I tell EVERYONE: It's NOT from Miami, no matter what Google says!"

Miami vs Fort Lauderdale: What's Available

Route Status Operator Schedule Price
Fort Lauderdale → Freeport ACTIVE Baleària Caribbean A few days/week (seasonal) One-way from ~$119
Miami (PortMiami) → Freeport NOT AVAILABLE None No service N/A

History lesson: There used to be ferries from Miami back in the day, and every year there's rumors about them coming back. Been hearing "next year" since 2019! Until it actually happens, Fort Lauderdale's your only option for getting to Freeport by ferry.

Why We Love Freeport (Worth the Extra Drive!)

Gold Rock Beach in Lucayan National Park, Grand Bahama — rippled white sand at low tide

More Island, Less Crowds

Grand Bahama is HUGE — about 96 miles long vs Bimini's 7! You get real beaches that go on forever, not just a strip of sand. Gold Rock Beach alone makes the longer ferry ride worth it.

Fishing Paradise

Brought my fishing gear last time — caught 6 mahi-mahi and a wahoo! The deep water's closer to shore than Bimini, and there's way more variety. Local guides are cheaper too, around $400 for a half day vs $600+ in Bimini.

Port Lucaya Marketplace and marina with sailboats, Freeport, Grand Bahama

Port Lucaya Marketplace

This place is a blast! Live music, conch fritters that'll change your life, and the kids can shop for souvenirs while you grab a cold Kalik. Way more to do than Bimini when you're not on the beach.

Critical Info About Freeport Port

The ferry docks at an industrial port that's literally in the middle of nowhere — about 15 miles from Port Lucaya's beaches and shops. You CANNOT walk to anything fun. Here's what actually works:

  • Rental Car: $60-80/day — book NOW, not later!
  • Taxi: $14-20 per person each way (family of 4 = $112+ round trip)
  • Port Shuttle: $7 per person to Port Lucaya (runs hourly, sometimes)

My advice: Just rent the car. Split between a family, it's cheaper than taxis and you can actually explore the island. We've done it both ways — car wins every time.

Pro Tips from 8 Years of Freeport Trips

Timing is Everything

Tuesday ferry = way less crowded than Saturday. Book at least 2 weeks ahead to save $30-40 per ticket. Summer schedule sometimes adds more days — check in May!

Pack Like a Pro

Bring Dramamine — 3.75 hours can get rough! Pack snacks (ferry café is pricey). Download movies for kids. Reef-safe sunscreen (they check at some beaches now).

Money Matters

US dollars work everywhere, but bring cash for taxis and tips. ATMs at Port Lucaya if you need more. Everything costs about 30% more than Florida — budget accordingly!

Beach Strategy

Gold Rock Beach: Stunning but 25 miles away (need that car!). Taino Beach: Closer, has restaurants, perfect with kids. Lucaya Beach: Walking distance from Port Lucaya, super convenient.

Tickets & Seats

Premium seats ($30 extra) include snacks and priority boarding — worth it with kids or if you get seasick! Economy is fine, just board early for good seats together.

Make it a Long Weekend

Day trip is too rushed for the travel time. We do Tuesday departure, Friday return — perfect! Gives you 3 full days to explore without feeling rushed.

Freeport vs Bimini: Real Talk

Look, I love both islands, but they're totally different experiences. Here's how I decide:

Choose Bimini if:

  • Quick weekend trip (2-hour ferry)
  • First time taking a ferry
  • Kids get seasick easily
  • Want to walk everywhere

Choose Freeport if:

  • Want variety and space (4+ days)
  • Love beaches without crowds
  • Into fishing or diving
  • Don't mind renting a car
  • Want "real" Bahamas experience

Where to Stay in Freeport & Lucaya

Mark's Final Thoughts

"After 8 years and probably 20+ trips to Freeport, here's what I know for sure: Yeah, you gotta drive to Fort Lauderdale. Yeah, the ferry ride's longer than Bimini. And yeah, you absolutely need transportation when you get there. But Grand Bahama delivers in ways Bimini just can't. More beaches, more activities, more space to breathe. My kids actually prefer it now — they love having room to explore instead of being stuck on one tiny strip of sand with 500 other tourists. Just remember: It's Fort Lauderdale, not Miami. Book your rental car NOW. And pack that Dramamine. You'll thank me later!"
